Morning Netflix Review
One of the cool things about Netflix is that you don't pay extra for being
curious and about a few movies that may not big big box office hits. The
problem is that a lot of these movies failed for good reason.
Last night's flick:
Racing Stripes:
Verdict: A cute kids movie. Parents can use the time to catch up on stuff
like bills and email.
Pros: great cast. Dustin Hoffman is really good in everything even when he
is voicing an overaged pony. Whoopi was not annoying (a surprise). Music by
Sting and Brian Adams!? I guess they had money left over because animals
work cheap.
Cons: nothing orignal in the plot. Bathroom humor (thank you David Spade).
I have a question: if the chick who played Nina in Just Shoot me is in a
movies so os David Spade. These guys resumes have been totally parallel in
the last few years. I will IMDB them to confirm my suspicion.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Verdict: I liked it. It was missing a powerful narrative, but I still liked
it.
Pros: The art and costume direction were out of the park. Sean was good but
not Last Crusade good. In reality the best part was on the DVD extras when
Sean says he did the picture because he didn't understand it. He was pissed
because he was offered Lord of the Rings and Matrix but he didn't
understand them and they were big hits and he felt left out. Sean. Sean.
Sean. . . .
Cons: the story felt way too forced. It needed some script work.
In hindsight, I'm sure Sean as Gandalf would have distracted from the Frodo
narrative. Sean as Sauraman would have been less believable ("Frodo was the
dog's name Junior!). Sean as Morpheus would have made the Neo-Morpheus
relationship much more master-teacher. It would have sold the Morpheus as
prophet idea a little better. Otherwise Lawrence Fishburn really made that
role interesting.
Next Netflix review:
Why I like "Shall We Dance" despite hating Geer, Sarandom, Jennifer Lopez
and ballroom dancing.
